A Smart Home Example

In a smart home, sensors, devices and appliances work together via communication connections (wire or wirelss) and work with the Internet via a gateway.

The state of the home is constantly monitored by a central computer or a group of computers to achieve the following, just to list a few:
  • Turn on and off appliances automatically at neccesary times to save energy.
  • Turn off the oven when food is overcooked.
  • Monitor indoor air quality and keep the resident updated.
  • Shut off the water when a tub is about to overflow.
  • Monitor the light levels and raise or lower blinds properly.
  • Lights and music are switched on or off at the right times.
  • Identify intruders and sound alarms.
  • Unlock entrance doors and garage doors automatically when owners approach.
  • Feed pets on schedule with the right amount of food.
  • Notify the resident when it's time to take medicine.
  • Alert the hospital if the resident needs help.
  • Track how much the resident is eating.
